This guide is for Windows 10 Home. It covers activating an existing Windows 10 Home install and doing a clean install from USB.
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. It installs and activates normally, but no longer receives free security updates. Windows 10 Home remains the practical choice for PCs that lack TPM 2.0 or a supported processor for Windows 11.
Before you start
- Requirements: 1 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM for 64-bit (1 GB for 32-bit), 32 GB storage. No TPM or Secure Boot needed.
- Have your 25-character Windows 10 Home key ready.
- Check your current edition under Settings > System > About. This key activates Windows 10 Home only, not Home Single Language, Home N, or Pro.
Option A: Activate an existing Windows 10 Home install
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter your key and select Next, then Activate.
Option B: Clean install from USB
- Open Microsoft's Windows 10 download page and download the Media Creation Tool.
- Run it, choose Create installation media for another PC, and select your language, Windows 10, and 64-bit. Pick 32-bit only for a PC with under 4 GB RAM or a 32-bit-only processor.
- Choose USB flash drive and select an 8 GB or larger stick. It will be erased.
- Boot the target PC from the USB (boot menu key is usually F12, F11, F2, Esc or Del).
- At the product key screen, enter your Home key so the installer installs Home. If you skip it, select Windows 10 Home from the edition list, not Pro or Home Single Language.
- Choose Custom: Install Windows only, select the drive and complete setup. Disconnecting from the internet during setup lets you create a local account instead of a Microsoft account.
- Activate afterwards using Option A.
Windows 10 Home specific problems
Error 0xC004F050 or "key didn't work"
The installed edition does not match. The most common cause on laptops is Windows 10 Home Single Language, a separate edition that standard Home keys are often rejected on. Check Settings > System > About and contact us before ordering again or retrying.
The PC has Pro installed
A Home key cannot activate Pro. Either clean install Home using Option B, or buy a Windows 10 Pro key to activate what is already there.
Error 0xC004C003
The activation server rejected the key. Stop retrying and contact support with a screenshot.
S mode
If the PC is in S mode, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Switch to Windows 10 Home, then Go to the Store and select Get. This is free and one-way.
