Windows Server 2025 Standard

Windows Server 2025 Standard is the latest Long-Term Servicing Channel release of Microsoft's server operating system, in the edition designed for physical servers and lightly virtualised environments. It covers file and print, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IIS, Remote Desktop Services and Hyper-V.

What is new in Windows Server 2025?

• SMB over QUIC in all editions – secure file access over the internet without a VPN, previously limited to Azure Edition
• Active Directory improvements – a new functional level, 32k database page size and stronger default security
• Faster storage – significant NVMe performance gains over Server 2022
• Hyper-V upgrades – GPU partitioning and higher VM scale limits
• Hardened defaults – SMB signing and other protections enabled out of the box

Standard or Datacenter: which do you need?

Standard edition grants rights to run up to two virtual machines plus the Hyper-V host on a fully licensed server. That suits a small business running one or two workloads. If you run many VMs on one host, or need Storage Spaces Direct, shielded VMs or software-defined networking, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the edition built for that.

Support lifecycle

Microsoft's Windows Server 2025 lifecycle page lists mainstream support until 13 November 2029 and extended support until 14 November 2034.

Licensing notes

Windows Server is licensed per physical core under Microsoft's model, and Client Access Licences (CALs) for users or devices are licensed separately from the server operating system. Remote Desktop Services requires its own RDS CALs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I activate an evaluation copy with this key?

Yes, but an evaluation install must first be converted to the full edition with the DISM /Set-Edition command. Entering a key directly into an evaluation install is the most common reason a valid server key is rejected.

Can I upgrade in place from Windows Server 2022?

Yes. Windows Server 2025 supports in-place upgrade from Server 2012 R2 and later. Take a full backup first.

Can I switch from Standard to Datacenter later?

Yes. A Standard install can be converted to Datacenter with DISM and a Datacenter key, without reinstalling.
